The measure of the angle formed by two secants, two tangents or a secant and a tangent drawn from a point outside a circle is equal to half the difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.

Calculation:

As AB¯ and AC¯ are tangents, therefore by the theorem, “The measure of the angle formed by\two tangents drawn from a point outside a circle is equal to half the difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.”

The measure of angle x is

  x°=12(mBECmBC)

Now, mBEC=mBE+mEC

We know, mEC=130°

And

  mBE=360°(mBC+mEC)mBE=360°(110°+130°)mBE=120°

Therefore,

  mBEC=mBE+mECmBEC=120°+130°mBEC=250°

Thus,

  x°=12(mBECmBC)x°=12(250°110°)x°=12(140°)x°=70°

Now for y:

As DE¯ is tangent and DC¯ is a secant, then applying the theorem, “The measure of the angle formed by a secant and a tangent drawn from a point outside a circle is equal to half the difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.”

We get, EDC=12(130°y)

Given EDC=40°

Therefore,

  40°=12(130°y)80°=130°yy=130°80°y=50°

Conclusion:

The value of x and y is: x=70° and y=50°
