Giveninformation: In below given figure, CD¯ is a tangent, arc AC arc BC , AB=3,AF=6,FE=10 .

Concept used:Use the following theorems:

  1. A chord subtends equal angles at a tangent as well as on its remaining arc.
  2. If a secant and a tangent join at an exterior point, then the square of the tangent is equal to the product of secant and its exterior part of circle.
  3. In two triangles if two pairs of corresponding angles are congruent, then these two triangles are similar.

Proof:Let ED=x,CD=y .

Now angle formed by arc AC on remaining arc is ABC and angle formed by arc BC will be equal to BCD by using (i) theorem.

So, in ΔABF and ΔFCD , as arc AC arc BC , so,

  ABC=BCD......(i)

  AFB=CFD(Vertical s)......(ii)

So by AA similarity, both these triangles are similar, so the ratio of their corresponding sides will be equal, or,

  CDAB=DFAFy3=10+x6y=10+x2

Again using (ii) theorem,

  CD2=AD×DFy2=(10+6+x)×xy2=x(16+x)

Now on plug in the above value of y in this last equation,

  (10+x2)2=x(16+x)100+x2+20x4=x2+16x100+x2+20x=4x2+64x4x2+64x100x220x=03x2+44x100=0

Factorize it as,

  3x2+50x6x100=0x(3x+50)2(3x+50)=0(3x+50)(x2)=03x+50=0x=503(Rejected)

And, x2=0x=2

Conclusion: Thus,by above calculation it is cleared that ED=2 .
