Calcium chloride is formed as a byproduct during the commercial production of sodium carbonate. Calcium chloride is a non-volatile solute and also a strong electrolyte. Calcium chloride added to a pure solvent decreases its freezing point because the addition of a solute in the solvent leads to an elevation in the boiling point and a depression in the freezing point.
