Concept explainers
Interpretation: Theuse of excess energy of the atom needs to be explained which is released when an atom returns back to the group state from the excited state.
Concept interpretation:An electron jumps from lower energy level to higher energy level by absorbing energy equal to the difference in the energy between the two levels.
Answer to Problem 12A
When electron jumps from higher energy level to lower energy level it losses energy equal to the energy difference between the levels by the process of emission. This emission of energy takes the form of a visible light. For example, emission of energy from copper shows green color and the color varies on the amount of energy release from different atoms.
Explanation of Solution
Although the energy absorbed by the electron follows the law of conservation of energy the energy that is absorbed by the electron to go into the higher state is equal to the energy emitted by the electron to return back to the ground state. So the color shown in atom while emitting have the same amount of energy.
Hence, the excess energy released from an electron while returning to ground state is equal to the energy absorbed while going to excited state and that emitted energy is shown in the form of visible light.
