Chapter 11, Problem 26A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The similarly and differences between the 2s and 1s orbital of hydrogen atom is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

The 2s orbital has greater energy as compared to 1s orbital but their electron occupant probability is same.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 26A

Similarities: The similarities between them is given as

  1. Both having the spherical shape
  2. Both orbital are probability present at nucleus.
  3. Both have equal probability of accommodation of electrons.

Difference: Differences between them ace given as

  1. The size of 1s orbital is smaller than the 2s orbital.
  2. 2s has possessed larger energy than the 1s orbital.
  3. 1s orbital is more close to nucleus as compared to the 2s orbital.

Explanation of Solution

In the case of similarities of 2s and 1s orbital, orbital have same shape and their finding probability at the nucleus is equal because the occurrence probability of electron in 2s orbital is maximum as compared to 1s orbital. But there are some differences also present between these orbitals. They are differed in own size because 1s is lies in first energy level and 2s lies in the second energy level. So, second energy level has greater energy as compared to first one.

Conclusion

The 2s orbital is differ from 1s orbital in various aspects such as their size, their energy, their distance from the nucleus but they have similarities also such as electrons accommodation probability, their occurrenceA at the nucleus and their shapes etc.
