A.
Interpretation: The pros and cons of using computer programs for developing layout are to be discussed.
Concept Introduction:Developing a plant layout is a team process working with lot of data and aspects of uncertainty. The required results include tangible as well as intangible ones. The computer programs are available for data processing, modeling and simulations etc. But finally human decisions are always required.
B.
Interpretation: Whether human planners produce superior layouts or computer programs and the reasons for inconclusiveness of such study.
Concept Introduction:A layout design, firstly, results in the physical arrangement of the components (i.e. the departments/sections etc.) One of the aspects is to optimize the inter- departmental travel/flow of material. The other aspect is the internal arrangement of each department. While the computer aided solutions can work on data −specifically the distance/travel related data, the humans have to design the internal arrangement. Some of the parameter for internal arrangement are aesthetics, ergonomics; ease of maintenance & upkeep; ease of supervision etc.
While the former can be done better with the computer based programs, the later has to be based on human output.
