Chapter 14.5, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The gene expression in the individuals heterozygous for the sickle cell allele shows effects of the allele under some circumstances.

Introduction:

The sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder. This occurs due to the mutation in the hemoglobin chain which results in the change of shape of hemoglobin. The hemoglobin gets sickle shape. Due to its sickle shape, the binding affinity of hemoglobin towards oxygen decreases.

MAKE CONNECTIONS In a research article aboutalkaptonuria published in 1902, Garrod suggested thathumans inherit two “characters” (alleles) for a particularenzyme and that both parents must contribute a faultyversion for the offspring to have alkaptonuria. Today, would this disorder be called dominant or recessive?(See Concept 14.4.)
MAKE CONNECTIONS Given that changes in morphologyare often caused by changes in the regulation of geneexpression, predict whether noncoding DNA is likely to beaffected by natural selection. See Concept 18.3 to reviewnoncoding DNA and regulation of gene expression.
Genetics Question: In humans, an allele for black hair in one gene can mask the expression of color on a secondgene. In one family with 10 children, 7 have black hair like their parents, 2 with red hair, and onewith blond hair. The blond child soon came of age and married a man with red hair. All their children have red hair. a. What specific mode of inheritance is exhibited? b. Using the letters A and B, assign alleles to the traits c. Based on the 9:3:3:1 ratio, what are the genotypes of the following:  7 children with black hair ________________ 2 children with red hair ___________________ 1 child with blond hair ____________________ d. Give the COMPLETE genotypes of the following:  Parents of the children ____________________ Man with red hair _________________________ All children (of the man) with red hair ________________
