Some mutations result in proteins that function well at one temperature but are nonfunctional at a different (usually higher) temperature. Siamese cats have such a “temperature-sensitive” mutation in a gene encoding an enzyme that makes dark pigment in the fur. The mutation results in the breed's distinctive point markings and lighter body color (see the photo). Using this information and what you learned in the chapter, explain the pattern of the cat’s fur pigmentation.

- Exposing Escherichia coli (e.coli) to ionizing radiation results in DNA damage. Say you perform an experiment and expose E. coli to increasing levels of ionizing radiation over time. After 180 minutes, all bacteria cells are found dead. 1. How do levels of LexA change over 180 minutes? Explain what is driving this change? 2. What changes in gene expression would occur over the course of the 180 minutes as a direct result of the changes in LexA levels? Detail how changing levels of LexA lead to such changes in gene expression.arrow_forwardEVOLUTION LINK DNA technology, such as the production of transgenic animals, is possible only because widely different organisms have essentially identical genetic systems (DNA RNA protein). What is the evolutionary significance of the universality of genetic systems in organisms as diverse as bacteria and pigs?arrow_forwardBeadle and Tatum proposed the one gene-one enzyme concept - This hypothesis can now be restated in which of the following ways? A given sequence of DNA nucleotides contains information to make one enzyme Each gene contains information to make one protein, one lipid and one carbohydrate Each gene is actually an enzyme that catalyzes the production of one protein Each polypeptide is the result of the activity of one enzymearrow_forward
- Need help fast Differentiate between a point mutation and a gene mutation. Also, answer the following question: - Can a point mutation be a gene mutation - and vice versa – can a gene mutation be a point mutation? Please be sure to include a diagram as a part of your response.arrow_forwardPlease answer fast Give ans for each statement 1.A protein linked to a disease state is being studied by scientists. They discover that the disease protein has the same amino acid sequence as the protein in healthy people. State right or wrong: Does the following explanation provide a plausible biological explanation for the disease state? a.The RNA polymerase does not correctly read the codon code on the mRNA. b.The protein is not being regulated properly. c.The disease protein is incorrectly folded. d. The disease protein lacks a post-translational modification. e.The protein amounts differ because they are expressed differently.arrow_forwardEvidence: Scientists found that the runners in the test who sprinted the slowest had no ACTN3 protein molecules in their bodies. Do you think that this evidence shows that the ACTN3 protein determines running ability? Explain your ideas using the words protein, trait, and feature in your response. Evidence: Scientists found that the runners who sprinted at an average pace had half the amount of ACTN3 protein molecules as the runners who sprinted the fastest. Do you think that this evidence shows that the ACTN3 protein determines running ability? Explain your ideas using the words protein, trait, and feature in your response.arrow_forward
- BIOLOGY ACTIVITY -Gene Mutations and Proteins Objective: To demonstrate how gene mutations affect the production of proteins? Procedure: Use the following base sequence of one strand of an imaginary DNA molecule: AATTGAACACATGCGCCC. 2. Write the base sequence for an mRNA strand that would be transcribed from the given DNA sequence. Place your results in the table below. Use your codon table provided below to determine the sequence of amino acids in the resulting protein fragment. Place your results in the table below. If the fifth base in the original DNA strand were changed from G to C, how would this affect the resulting protein fragment? Write the new protein fragment in the table below. If G were added to the original DNA strand after the third base, what would the resulting mRNA look like? How would this addition affect the protein? Show your results in the table below. - Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion lets say, you treat a bacteria with an unknown antibiotic. After three short days, the bacteria becomes resistant to the antibiotic. Mind you, after three days you measure the S12 protein mutations and they highly increased those three days. what is most likey the antibiotic identity and why?arrow_forwardBeadle and Tatum's experiments led to the "one gene - one enzyme (protein)" hypothesis. In subsequent years, many exceptions to this hypothesis were noted. A molecule of hemoglobin fails to support this hypothesis for which of the following reasons? n eukaryotes, one gene can code form multiple isoforms of a polypeptide. The functional hemoglobin protein is made from multiple polypeptides. Not all enzymes are proteins. Not all genes encode proteins.arrow_forwardA genetic researcher notices that individuals with a particular genetic disease have a shortened version of key protein involved in the diseased biochemical pathway. Which of the following mutations is most likely to result in the premature termination of protein synthesis? A. The disease is caused by a silent mutation. B. The disease is caused by a frameshift mutation. C. The disease is caused by a missense mutation. D. The disease is caused by a nonsense mutation.arrow_forward
