Introduction:

According to the signal hypothesis, different proteins are destined for secretion to different locations. The movement of the protein can take place across a biological membrane. Initially, they have a stretch of amino acids upstream their actual sequence, and once the proteins reach their destination, this extra sequence, called the signal sequence, is removed. The cleavage of the signal sequence occurs in most proteins, but not in all.
