Concept Introduction:
Cis-trans isomerism arises by restricted rotation of groups that are joined together by double bonds.
Like all other isomers, the cis-trans isomers also have the same molecular formula, but different structural formula.
If the molecule has dipole moment, it is termed as polar molecule. The symmetrical molecules are non-polar because the dipole moment cancels each other

Why are these two conformational isomers? I was under the impression that in molecules with only sigma bonds, the bonds can rotate freely, and so the placement of the chlorines wouldn't matter?
Draw the structural formula(s) for the constitutional isomer(s) with the molecular formula C7H16 that have an unbranched chain.
