To determine: The amino acids which contain more than one chiral carbon atom and their structure indicating all chiral carbon atoms.

The first amino acid which contains more than one chiral carbon atom is isoleucine; its structure is shown in Figure 1.

Isoleucine is an α -amino acid with a chemical formula of C6H13NO2 . Its systematic name is 2-amino-3-methylpentanoicacid .  The root name pentanoic signifies the presence of five carbon atoms, 2-amino and 3-methyl shows the presence of amino group on carbon second and methyl group on carbon third respectively. Since, C-1 and C-2 has four different substituents attached to them as shown in Figure 1, hence it is chiral in nature
