Chapter 22, Problem 22.13P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

It is to be shown how to synthesize 1-phenylbutan-1-one from benzene and alcohol using a Friedel-Crafts acylation.

Concept introduction:

When aromatic species are treated with an acid chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g., AlCl3), acylation takes place at the aromatic ring; it is called a Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction. Acid chlorides can be prepared from the corresponding primary alcohols in two steps; in the first step, alcohol is oxidized to corresponding carboxylic acid either by the treatment of potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) or by refluxing with alkaline potassium permanganate (KMnO4). In the second step, carboxylic acid is converted to the corresponding acid chloride by the treatment of either SOCl2 or PCl5.
