Interpretation:

In the acid-catalyzed aromatic alkylation involving 1-methylcyclohexene and benzene, two isomeric products are possible, but only one is formed as shown in the reaction. The complete mechanism that leads to each product is to be drawn. The reason for formation of only one isomer is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Friedal-Crafts alkylation can also take place in the presence of acids other than AlCl₃ where a carbocation can be generated. The aromatic compound undergoes electrophilic substitution reaction with carbocations where the aromatic ring acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electrophilic carbocation.
