Interpretation- To determine the first process in the refining of petroleum.
Concept introduction-
Petroleum is a mixture of many hydrocarbons with 1 carbon to 40 carbon atoms. This crude oil is not very useful until it is refined, and its component is separated. The refining process is very complex but the following are the basic steps:
- Distillation
- Cracking
- Reforming
Answer to Problem 34LC
The first process in the refining of petroleum is distillation.
Explanation of Solution
The refining of petroleum mainly occurs in three stages as follows:
- Distillation
- Cracking
- Reforming
In the first step of distillation, the crude oil began to separate into its component based on their boiling point. A fractioning column is used, where crude oil is heated, and the most volatile component is condensed at the top while the least volatile component settles at the bottom.
