In a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction, the aromatic ring is attacked by a nucleophile. If multiple substituents are attached to a phenyl ring, their activating/deactivating qualities are additive. Nitro group activates the ring toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Nucleophilic addition/elimination reaction occurs in two stages. The first involves the addition reaction which is followed by an elimination reaction.
