Fig(2) As shown in the figure the Cl- ions get more and more accumulated inside the neurons in the presence of ethanol and benzodiazepines, it enhances the effect of GABA by binding with the GABA receptor site. GABA keeps electrical impulse from passing through a neurons by binding to a receptor site on a channel that penetrates the cell membrane of the neurons. As shown in the Fig(1)a, GABA binds to the receptor site the channel opens,allowing chloride ion migrate to neuron.To maintain negative electric potential into the cell-membrane. Ethanol and benzodiazepines binds to the receptor site located adjacent to GABA receptor sites shown in the Fig(1)b and Fig (2) helps in opening the chloride ion channel so that, chloride ions can move in the concentration of chloride ions could be moderate. If it increases its limit then it is hazardous to health.

Therefore, a primary way in which ethanol and benzodiazepines exerts their depressants effect is by enhancing the action of GABA.
