What is an advantage of synaptic clefts between neurons rather than direct connections?
An advantage of synaptic clefts between neurons rather than direct connections.
Answer to Problem 8TE
An advantage of synaptic clefts between neurons rather than direct connection is that it is the presence of synaptic cleft which is responsible for the activation of the receptor sites. Activation of receptor site is possible because of organic compound known as neurotransmitter. Synthesis of neurotransmitter is possible only because site is provided by the synaptic cleft.
Explanation of Solution
Narrow space / gap between two neurons is known as synaptic cleft. The vessels (bubble like compartment) are created in the synaptic cleft. These vessels release neurotransmitter in the cleft. This organic compound i.e. neurotransmitter is responsible for the activation of the receptor sites. So if there will be direct connection than the synthesis of neurotransmitter would not be possible. As a result of this the activation of receptor would not be possible and the particular direction of nerve impulse would not be ensured.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the main advantage of synaptic cleft between neurons rather than direct connection is that it provides the site to release the neurotransmitter which is an essential organic compound for the activation of receptor sites.
