Psychological dependence and physiological dependence can be distinguished on the basis of craving and need of an individual for the drug.

Explanation of Solution

Drug addiction involves both physical and psychological dependence. Physical dependence refers to the need to continue the use of drug to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Drug withdrawal symptoms include depression, fatigue etc. Whereas Psychological dependence refers to the craving to continue the use of drug.

Physical dependence can be withdrawn but psychological dependence can exist even after the removal of physical dependence. This leads to the fact that complete abolition of psychological dependence is much difficult.

Psychological dependence is the craving to continue the use of drug while the physical need refers to the need to continue the use of drug to avoid withdrawal symptoms like depression, fatigue etc.

Conclusion:

Therefore, physical dependence is related to the need of drug whereas psychological dependence refers to the craving for drug.
