Introduction:
The inflow of sodium (Na+) ions in the plasma membrane through the membrane channel regulates the depolarization of nervous and muscular system and their functions. It is the main cation present in the extracellular fluid (ECF) and is associated with regulation of blood plasma osmolarity. Increased concentration of sodium raises the osmolarity of the blood. Also, it determines the level as well as distribution of total body water among several fluid compartments. Gradients of Na+ ions across the cell generate potential energy helps to transport other solutes. Also, it regulates body heat and pH of the ECF. Aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone, and natriuretic peptides regulate the concentration of Na+ in the body.

- Licorice is used as a remedy in Chinese traditional medicine and also is a flavoring for candy. When licorice is eaten, one of its components triggers the formation of a compound that mimics aldosterone and binds to receptors for it. Based on this information, explain why people who have high blood pressure are advised to avoid eating much licorice.arrow_forwardDescribe the functions of the following hormones: Aldosterone Erythropoietin Antidiuretic hormone Angiotensin II Epinephrinearrow_forwardCompare and contrast aldosterone and vasopressin.arrow_forward
- describe the effects of ADH and aldosterone on body waterarrow_forwardMorgan is a nurse at the local hospital. She received the lab results back from a patient that said the patient has hyperaldosteronism, a high level of aldosterone. Based on this diagnosis, explain what you would expect in regard to blood levels of Na+ and K+ as well as blood pressure. Explain why.arrow_forwardA patient has a tumor in the adrenal cortex that continuously secretes large amounts of aldosterone. What is this condition called, and what effects does this have on the total amount of sodium and potassium in her body?arrow_forward
- Maintenance of fluid balance is important for the survival of humans. How does antidiuretic hormone and aldosterone contribute to the maintenance of fluid balance?arrow_forwardExplain how the mineralocorticoid and Aldosterone regulates sodium and potassium homeostasis.arrow_forwardANP acts as a _____and an antagonist to aldosterone, resulting in a _____in blood volume.arrow_forward
- You have read that aldosterone causes sodium ion retention from the kidneys. How would blocking aldosterone secretion decrease the amount of water retained from the fluid in the kidneys?arrow_forwardTheoretically, which one of the following hormones could be administered to decrease blood volume: antidiuretic hormone, aldosterone, parathyroid hormone, or atrial natriuretic peptide? Explain.arrow_forwardExplain the functions of ADH, ANH, and aldosterone inhomeostasis.arrow_forward
