To discuss:
Acidosis and alkalosis affect the neuromuscular system.
Introduction:
The proper composition and balance of fluid, electrolyte, and acid–base are required to regulate the cellular functions of the body. The urinary, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, nervous, cardiovascular systems etc. maintain these balances.
Fluid balance: Equal maintenance of fluid gain and loss; and proper distribution of fluid in the body.
Electrolyte balance: Equal maintenance of absorbed electrolytes by the small intestine and loss of electrolytes through urine in the body.
Acid–base balance: Maintenance of the stable body pH.

- Micky Mango is a 64-year-old male admitted to the emergency room for asthma. His laboratory results are as follows: pH 7.31, pCO2 higher than normal, and total HCO3– also higher than normal. Classify his acid-base balance as acidosis or alkalosis, and as metabolic or respiratory. Is there evidence of compensation? Propose the mechanism by which asthma contributed to the lab results seen.arrow_forwardSuppose a patient has chronic metabolic acidosis, perhaps from type Il diabetes. Suppose a clinic is treating the acidosis by administering bicarbonate in the blood. If the kidney's removal of bicarbonate were inconsistent, what is something simple the clinic could do to check if the dosage of bicarbonate is appropriate?arrow_forwardDescribe what happens with H+ levels in the urine and HCO3- levels in the urine during respiratory alkalosis. Explain how this compensation mechanism helps with respiratory acidosis.arrow_forward
- A patient presents to the emergency department unconscious, after ingesting a bottle of temazepam. What acid–base disturbance would you expect to see? Increased anion gap metabolic acidosis Respiratory alkalosis Normal gap metabolic acidosis Respiratory acidosisarrow_forwardConcerning the reaction that is catalysed by carbonic anhydrase in red blood cells, briefly describe how the products of this reaction contribute to the buffering capacity of body fluids .arrow_forwardA patient suffers a seizure, becomes unconscious and stops breathing, what type of acid-base disturbance is this? How might this be compensated and by what system? Could the patient do this himself? Explain.arrow_forward
