To discuss:
The function of calcium, low calcium in the intracellular location, calcium homeostasis, and hyper- and hypocalcemia.
Introduction:
The proper composition and balance of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base are required to regulate the cellular functions of the body. The urinary, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, nervous, cardiovascular system and so forth maintain these balances.
Fluid balance: Equal maintenance of fluid gain and loss; and proper distribution of fluid in the body.
Electrolyte balance: Equal maintenance of absorbed electrolytes by the small intestine and loss of electrolytes through urine in the body.
Acid-base balance: The maintenance of the stable body pH.

- Calcium intake and bone mineral densityarrow_forwardBecause of the constant exchange of blood calcium and bone calcium, the concentration of calcium ions in the blood and tissue is very steady. Describe the process of calcium mobilization in bone tissue.arrow_forwardThe normal physiologic regulation of calcium homeostasis is NOT regulated by which of the following? 1) Parathyroid hormone 2) Vitamin D 3) Parathyroid hormone-related protein 4) Albumin no references, just homeworkarrow_forward
- "treatment for the gentic abnormalitis of calcium metaolism differs depending on the conditon" what would some of these treatments look like in regards to different conditons?arrow_forwardexplain the role of the calcitonin and parathyroid hormone in calcium homeostasisarrow_forwardRecommendation and advice about calcium and bone mineral intakearrow_forward
- What is rigor mortis? What causes this (discuss calcium's roll specifically)? Why does rigor mortis resolve after several days?arrow_forwardBone remodeling is a lifelong process that is tightly regulated by factors including hormones that maintain blood calcium homeostasis. Compare and contrast the processes by which parathyroid hormone versus calcitonin regulates blood calcium levels.arrow_forwardWhy is it important to regulate blood calcium concentration within such a narrow range?arrow_forward
- Biological activity of vitamin D includes all of the following, exceptA. Increase of Ca2+ excretion in kidneysB. Intensification of Ca2+ absorption in gutsC. Stimulation of synthesis of bone matrixD. Stimulation of calcification matrix in boneE. Stimulation of metabolism in musclesarrow_forwardScheme of calcitriol synthesis.arrow_forwardAn anatomy and physiology instructor asks two students to predicta patient’s response to chronic vitamin D deficiency. One studentclaims the person would suffer from hypocalcemia. The other studentclaims the calcium levels would remain within their normal range, although at the low end, and that bone reabsorption would occur tothe point that advanced osteomalacia might occur. With whom do youagree, and why?arrow_forward
