The article “Placebos Are Getting More Effective. Drug Makers Are Desperate to Know Why.” (Wired Magazine, August 8, 2009) states that “according to research, the color of a tablet can boost the effectiveness even of genuine meds—or help convince a patient that a placebo is a potent remedy.” Describe how you would design an experiment to investigate if adding color to Tylenol tablets would result in greater perceived pain relief. Be sure to address how you would select subjects, how you would measure pain relief, what colors you would use, and whether or not you would include a control group in your experiment.

- Researchers are interested in conducting a study to determine if men or women suffer more from anxiety. Would you conduct an experimental study or an observational study to answer this question?arrow_forwardIt is known that 86% of persons with insomnia also have reported a problem with fatigue. Dr. Delgado's patient Bob reports no problem with fatigue. Based on this information should Dr. Delgado decide that Bob has insomnia? Explain the answer.arrow_forwardA drug trial had 161 participants. A survey was done to gather information about the participants’ experiences with side effects. The table below gives the results for two possible side effects.arrow_forward
- Professor Rouge wants to see if the color red increases people's attraction. For all participants, she shows them someone in a red shirt, someone in a blue shirt, and someone in a green shirt - and the participant rates each person from 1-10 in terms of their attractiveness. The data that she collected are below. Conduct the appropriate statistic in order to test her hypothesis. Include calculations of the effect size. Report your findings in a brief paragraph (a complete paragraph, like the one from class) and include the two tables that we did in class. - You are the manager for a family medicine clinic that has 3 physicians. The staff have come to you with an informal observation that there are differences in the number of patients that each physician is seeing each day. As manager, it is your job to make management decisions based on unbiased data. In order to evaluate the situation you collect the number of patients seen by each physician for a 5 day work week. Your observations are provided in the table below. In order to see if there is a significant difference you need to conduct an ANOVA test. DR ID Patients seen 1 15 1 13 1 16 1 14 1 12 2 22 2 20 2 25 2 19 2 18 3 16 3 18 3 15 3 14 3 12 X 16.6arrow_forwardDoes the example represent an observational study or an experiment? Car accident data is obtained from the Ohio database. It is found that more accidents happened at night.arrow_forwardDo colors affect mood? You are particularly interested to know which color gives people a sense of serenity and peacefulness. You conduct an experiment by making participants stay for 20 minutes inside a room painted with a particular color (e.g., Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue). With the use of temperature-sensitive cameras, you record the average body temperature of each individual during their stay inside each room (i.e., lower body temperatures are associated with feelings of calmness and relaxation; higher body temperatures - stimulation, excitement). Results are presented on the table. Red Orange 39 Yellow Green Blue 43 38 33 31 39 43 39 35 34 41 44 42 34 32 42 35 39 37 32 45 40 39 36 35 41 39 38 33 34arrow_forward
