Phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP) is a pentosephosphate, which is synthesized from ribose-5-phosphate by the catalytic action of ribose-phosphate diphosphokinase. The high amount of PRPP leads to the accumulation of uric acid, causing hyperuricemia. This is one of the reasons for gout formation.
