Chapter 26.4, Problem 1CR

Leukocytes are differentiated white blood cells derived from either myeloid or lymphoid precursor cells. Cells of myeloid lineage include monocytes and granulocytes. Monocytes include macrophages and dendritic cells, specialized phagocytes that function as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to initiate an adaptive immune response. Granulocytes include neutrophils, which are also phagocytes but not APCs, and mast cells, which are important inducers of the inflammatory response but may also cause allergic reactions. Lymphocytes include B and T cells, which facilitate adaptive immunity, and natural killer cells, which play a key role in destroying virus-infected and cancerous host cells.

What is the origin of the phagocytes and lymphocytes active in the immune response? Track the maturation of B cells and T cells.

In addition to phagocytosis, neutrophils use a process called NETs.  Which one of the following describes this process? Group of answer choices A. NETs is a neutrophil process that activates the complement system of proteins, which destroys pathogens. B. A net-like structure of DNA, histones, lactoferrins, gelatinase, cathepsin G, and myeloperoxidase is secreted at pathogens. Together these chemicals destroy pathogens. C. NETs works when neutrophils secrete major basic proteins onto pathogens, destroying the pathogens' cell membranes. D. NETs are chemicals secreted by neutrophils that trigger the rapid maturation of lymphoid stem cells into lymphocytes.
These are cells which give rise to the lymphoid lineage of white blood cells or leukocytes- the ILCs, NK cells and the T and B lymphocytes. _____________3. These are cells which rise to the myeloid lineage which comprise to the rest of the leukocytes, the erythrocytes, and the megakaryocytes that produce platelets important in blood clotting. _____________4. This is the first line of defense which consists of a surface barrier and internal structures that employ physical and biochemical strategies to get rid of many microorganisms before they can invade body tissues. _____________5. This even takes days or even weeks to become established and more specific to an invading pathogen. _____________6. The collective and coordinated process performed by immune system upon the introduction of a foreign substance. _____________7. The successful invasion of a pathogenic organism inside the body. _____________8. This immune response involves the destruction of infected cells by cytotoxic T…
