Chapter 3, Problem 3.24P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The specific gravity of the drilling mud and the weight percent of barite in it is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Mass percent of any component in a mixture or solution is calculated as:

Mass Percent=m1m×100%   ........ (1)

Here, m1 is the mass of a component in a solution and m is the total mass of all the components present in the solution.

Density (ρ) of a substance is expressed as:

ρ=mV   ........ (2)

Here, m is the mass of the substance and V is the volume of the substance. Density can be expressed in several units. For convenience, here it is expressed in g/mL.

Specific gravity (SG) is a relative term used to express the ratio of density of a substance to the density of the reference substance. Since it is the ratio of same quantity, specific gravity is dimensionless.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The practical importance of the observation (i) is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

When oil wells are drilled, a slurry is pumped into it known as the drilling mud. It is used to remove the rock cutting which floats on the top of it, lubricate and cool the drill bits, and prevents the leakage of loose solids and water in the boreholes.

In a homogeneous mixture, particles of the components do not settle down and is present uniformly throughout the sample or the mixture.

Ceramics used as abrasives must be hard and tough and be able to withstand high temperatures that arise from frictional forces. What is the minimum required hardness (measure in Mohs scale) for a material to be used as abrasive? Your answer
A commercial 737 jet transporting 143 passengers and 5 crew members from Kansas city (MCI) to Baltimore (BWI) burned 11800 lb. of Jet A fuel. Jet A fuel is kerosene based, consisting primarily of CnH2n+2 hydrocarbons, with n = 6 to 16, so the  Carbon:Hydrogen ratio is close to 1:2. During this flight  How much CO2 would be released into the atmosphere if those passengers and crew made the trip instead, in pairs, in hybrid cars at 50 miles per gallon. (Assume the density of gasoline to be 0.75kg L-1 and that carbon and hydrogen dominate the composition in a ratio 1:2. The road trip is 1082 miles.
4. The iron, Fe, content of silicate rocks is often expressed as FeO or Fe₂O3. What is the difference between these two expressions? The FeO content in the mantle is 8.2wt. %. Calculate the wt% of Fe₂O3 in the mantle if all of the Fe is assumed to be in the form of Fe₂O3 instead of FeO. (M. Fe = 55.845 g/mol; M. O = 15.9994 g/mol)
