Chapter 3, Problem 3.46P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Whether the trend of bond angle in E( CF3)3 molecules (E = P, As and Sb) is reasonable or not should be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Lewis dot structure is also known as Lewis dot formula or electron dot structure. VSEPR theory stands as Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory. It helps to predict the molecular shape or geometry of the molecule with the help of the number of bond pair or lone pair present in it. According to VSEPR theory, the presence of lone pair on the central atom of molecule causes deviation from standard molecular geometry.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The other two C-E-C angles that suspects more and should be reinvestigated as of As(CF3)3 should be explained.

What strength of electric field is required to induce an electric dipole moment of magnitude 2.5 μD in a molecule of polarizability volume 1.05 × 10−29 m3 (like CCl4)?
the following figure shows the bond distances for the homonuclear diatomics of the 2 nd period p-block elements, as well as those for some of the ions derived from these species.      i) Note that N 2 + has a longer bond distance than N 2, but O 2 + has a shorter bond distance than O 2. Explain this difference.       ii) Estimate the bond distance of N 2 - and justify your answer.
The magnitude of the electric field at a distance r from a point charge Q is equal to Q/4πε0r2. How close to a water molecule (of polarizability volume 1.48 × 10−30 m3) must a proton approach before the dipole moment it induces has a magnitude equal to that of the permanent dipole moment of the molecule (1.85 D)?
