Cell membrane is also termed as plasma membrane. It is found in all cells and it separates the interior side of the cell from the extracellular matrix. The transport of molecules and ions across the cell membrane occurs via active transport, passive transport, and facilitated transport.

The movement of ions or molecules from the area of high concentration to the area of their lower concentration is termed as diffusion. Diffusion is mainly seen in gases and liquids because their molecules can randomly move from one place to another. This process is important in living cells, as it helps in the movement of substances across the cells.
