Chapter 37.8, Problem 1TYK
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Normally, the very little amount of stomach contents enter back into the esophagus because a muscular sphincter at the juncture between the esophagus and the stomach prevents it. This sphincter relaxes when we swallow food, and then closes again once food passes into the stomach. Under some conditions, the sphincter is forced to open by the pressure of material in the stomach. Due to which the acid in the stomach enters the esophagus and irritates nerve endings, causing the symptoms of heartburn which is called gastroesophageal reflux.
