Chapter 37.3, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction
To write:
About the energetic cost of nutrient absorption from the meal.
Introduction:
We consume carbohydrates in the form of energy it can be in the form of cellulose and polysaccharides starch from plants and glycogen is ingested from animals. The other simple carbohydrates such as fructose and glucose are absorbed from the fruits, and lactose from milk. Almost all these are digested inside the small intestine along with amylase found in the mouth and pancreas. The disaccharides maltose is digested with the help of amylase along with lactose and sucrose and break down into monosaccharides like glucose, galactose, and fructose.

Digestion is the first stage in the extraction of energy from food, but no useful energy is acquired during this stage. Why is digestion considered a stage in energy extraction?
The apparent digestibility, if the nutrient consumed is 95, and nutrient excreted is 35, is:
use following equation
Apparent digestibility = (Nutrients intake -nutrients in feces)/(nutrients i intake ) ×100 = ---- (%)
