Chapter 4, Problem 4.54AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures of two isomeric alkenes with molecular formula C6H12 which reacts with HI to give the same product and undergoes catalytic hydrogenation to give hexane are to be stated.

Concept introduction:

When an unsymmetrical alkene is reacted with hydrogen halide, an alkyl halide is formed. The substitution of hydrogen halide in an alkene takes place by Markovnikov’s rule. Catalytic hydrogenation is a reduction process of addition of hydrogen atoms in an alkene or an alkyne by using a metal catalyst. The number of bonds is reduced between carbon atoms.

5B In the following reactions, mixtures of alkenes and ethyl ethers are formed. Draw their structures. Explain which is or are likely to be the main product(s) in each reaction. In case of formation of two isomers of alkenes, explain which is formed in greater proportion CH3 CH3 H3C-C H -Br CH3 EtOH
There are three constitutional isomers with the molecular formula C5H12. When treated with chlorine at 300°C, isomer A gives a mixture of four monochlorination products. Under the same conditions, isomer B gives a mixture of three monochlorination products and isomer C gives only one monochlorination product. From this information, assign structural formulas to isomers A, B, and C.
Compound W has molecular formula C₁4H18 and reacts with H₂ to form X. Oxidative cleavage of W with O3 followed by CH3 SCH3 affords Y. What is the structure of W?
