Question
Chapter 5, Problem 33P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
From the given options, molecules that are chiral and capable of existing as enantiomers are to be identified.
Concept introduction:
Enantiomers are a type of stereoisomers that are non-superposable mirror images of each other.
A chiral molecule is one that has non-superposa-ble mirror image and an achiral molecule is one that has superposable mirror image.
A chiral molecule and its mirror image are enantiomers.
Enantiomers exist only for chiral molecules.
For any molecule to have enantiomers, there must be one chiral center present.
A common chiral center present in molecules is a carbon atom attached to four different groups.

Q1. Ignoring compounds that contain double bonds, write bond-line structures for all isomers of molecular formula
C4H9N. Be sure to consider whether stereoisomerism is possible.
(a) How many isomers are there in total
(b) How many isomers are chiral
(c) How many pairs of diastereomers are there
(d) Label any chiral centres as R, S
Make a model of each compound, draw it in its most symmetric conformation, and determine whether it is capable of showing optical activity. 1,2-dichloropropane
3b)
(i) Using Fischer projection, draw all the stereoisomers of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypentanoic acid.
ii) Assign the chiral centre(s) with R/S configurations in part (b)(i). Indicate which areenantiomers, diastereomers and meso compounds (if any).
