Chapter 7, Problem 19A
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Cell would be affected if it lost the ability to be selectively permeable

Introduction:

Selective permeable of cell membranes are allows only certain molecules to enters or release out from the cell. For example water, ions, carbon dioxide, and glucose. These are important for the metabolic process of the cell.

Explanation of Solution

The cell membranes are made of selectively permeable phospholipids bilayer. These bilayers contain hydrophilic region and hydrophobic region. The phospholipids layers allow to glycolipids, cholesterol, and protein from the channels or gates. Selective permeable of the cell membrane regulates through signal molecules, ions, and macromolecules.

The movement across a selectively permeable membrane occurs by the active or passive process. Water molecules transfer through passively in small pores of the membrane.

Glucose, amino acids, and vitamins transfer through the active process. If the process is to fails, it shows the presence of glucose or byproduct of protein in the urine. These are the symptoms of diabetes.

The Selective permeability of the cell membrane is important for a cell to maintain internal and external environments. The enzyme and hormone destroy due to the absence of selectively permeable membranes.

Conclusion

Thus, the cell will be destroyed if it lost the ability to be selectively permeable.
