Explanation of Solution

Cholesterol is essential for various biological process and is synthesized from simpler substances. It is vital for synthesis of hormones vitamin D and other substances.

On the cellular level, cholesterol is vital for formation for cell membrane and cell structures. Cholesterol helps to maintain membrane fluidity and prevents passage of positive hydrogen ions and sodium ions. It also exists as transporters help in cell signaling. The cholesterol is a precursor molecule of various biochemical pathways.

In case of no longer production of cholesterol, it will have adverse effect on the cells. The cholesterol molecules being non polar material, prevents sticking of tails of bilipid layer. If it is absent, the cell membrane will lose its fluidity and will turn rigid and eventually, it may cause death of the cell. The fluidity will be affected badly and fatty acid chains tails will stick together. The entry exit of molecules will be hampered which finally will affect the homeostasis of the cell.

Conclusion

Cholesterol is important for all living activities inside the cell and helps in maintenance, building up of cell membranes and other cell structures. It helps cell to achieve mobility to ensure all processes are carried out to maintain the internal balance of molecules and ions.
