Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for steel to be used as a supporting structure of many buildings needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Alloys are a combination of different metal elements to give increased strength and hardness. Moreover, such alloys have enhanced property wherein the material has resistance to corrosion, good mechanical properties. Example are Bronze, Brass and steel.
Answer to Problem 95A
Steel is used in construction industry as the iron forms a metallic bond and gives more strength and hardness to the structures.
Explanation of Solution
Among alloys, the most commonly used alloy in the construction industry is steel. Iron forms a strong metallic bond giving solid iron its hardness and strength. Steel is alloy of iron which has low percentage of carbon. Depending on this percentage, there are variety of steel namely carbon steel, tool steel, stainless steel, alloy steel. The main alloy of iron in construction industry is the carbon steel or mild steel.
When this steel is used along with cement, it bears the tensile stress and compressive stress. The reason being that concrete has high compressive strength and low tensile strength while steel has high tensile strength and high compressive strength. By combining both, their properties are merged and gives better strength to the structure.
Steel is used in construction industry as the iron forms a metallic bond and gives more strength and hardness to the structures.
