Concept introduction:
Chemical compounds are formed when the atoms, ions or molecules of two substances are attracted towards each other forming a chemical bond. This bond can be electrostatic when two oppositely charged ions are attracted towards each other and this bond is said to be ionic bond. When there is sharing of electrons between the two molecules it is a covalent bond.
Answer to Problem 2SSC
The two causes of force of attraction are intramolecular and intermolecular forces of attraction.
Explanation of Solution
The molecules are held together by forces that exist between the molecules. These forces that exist are partially positive and partially negative charged molecule. These forces are dipole-dipole interactions. These are intermolecular forces of attraction.
There are other forces of attraction that are formed by transfer of electrons between atoms. Due to transfer of electrons, there are charges generated and a force of attraction exists between the oppositely charged ions. These are intramolecular forces of attraction.
The two causes of force of attraction are intramolecular and intermolecular forces of attraction.
