Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The observation that cyclodecene can exist in both cis and trans forms, but cyclohexene cannot.
Concept introduction:
Among cis and trans isomers, the cis isomers are usually less stable due to the steric interferences that exist in these isomers. But the situation becomes quite different in the case of small and medium sized rings having up to seven atoms. In these cases twisting the ring so as to attain the trans configuration will introduce a severe strain in the molecule making them unstable. However in the case rings with eight and more carbon atoms the rings become large enough to twist without any strain leading to the existence of trans forms.
To Explain:
The observation that cyclodecene can exist in both cis and trans forms, but cyclohexene cannot.

- Draw the structural formula(s) for the branched constitutional isomer(s) with the molecular formula C7H16 that have three methyl groups.arrow_forwardThe carbon–carbon bond length in C2H2 is 1.20 Å, that inC2H4 is 1.34 Å, and that in C2H6 is 1.53 Å. Near which ofthese values would you predict the bond length of C2 tolie? Is the experimentally observed value, 1.31 Å, consistent with your prediction?arrow_forwardWhy are these two conformational isomers? I was under the impression that in molecules with only sigma bonds, the bonds can rotate freely, and so the placement of the chlorines wouldn't matter?arrow_forward
- Based from the figures below, which of the following statements is correct?I. A is an skeletal isomer of D while B and C are positional isomers.II. B and C are alkynes with six Carbons but their structures are different.III. All of the above have the possibility of a cis-trans isomerism.arrow_forwardClassify the following compounds as cis or trans structures. Write NA if the molecule cannot be classified as a sis or a trans structure.arrow_forwardWhich molecule would be more polar, CH3F or CH3Cl? And why?arrow_forward

Isomerization means the conversion of the cis compound to the trans (or vice versa) by rotation of the bonds. Explain whyarrow_forward
