Chapter 8, Problem 61SE

Contamination of mine soils in China is a serious environmental problem. The article “Heavy Metal Contamination in Soils and Phytoaccumulation in a Manganese Mine Wasteland, South China” (Air, Soil, and Water Res., 2008: 31–41) reported that, for a sample of 3 soil specimens from a certain restored mining area, the sample mean concentration of Total Cu was 45.31 mg/kg with a corresponding (estimated) standard error of the mean of 5.26. It was also stated that the China background value for this concentration was 20. The results of various statistical tests described in the article were predicated on assuming normality.

  1. a. Does the data provide strong evidence for concluding that the true average concentration in the sampled region exceeds the stated background value? Carry out a test at significance level .01. Does the result surprise you? Explain.
  2. b. Referring back to the test of (a), how likely is it that the P-value would be at least .01 when the true average concentration is 50 and the true standard deviation of concentration is 10?

The article “Dynamics of Insulin Action in Hypertension: Assessment from Minimal ModelInterpretation of Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test Data” (R. Burattini, M. Morettini, etal., Med Biol Eng Comput, 2011:831–841) compared levels of an insulin sensitivity index SIin patients with high blood pressure and patients with normal blood pressure. Ten patientswith high blood pressure had a mean value of 3.4 with a standard deviation of 0.6, and eightpatients with normal blood pressure had a mean value of 7.9 with a standard deviation of0.6. Units are 10−5 · min−1 · pmol−1. Find a 98% confidence interval for the difference inmean levels between those with high blood pressure and those with normal blood pressure.
Booted Eagles. The rare booted eagle of western Europe was the focus of a study by S. Suarez et al. to identify optimal nesting habitat for this raptor. According to their paper “Nesting Habitat Selection by Booted Eagles (Hieraaetus pennatus) and Implications for Management” (Journal of Applied Ecology, Vol. 37, pp. 215–223), the distances of such nests to the nearest marshland are normally distributed with mean 4.66 km and standard deviation 0.75 km. Let Y be the distance of a randomly selected nest to the nearest marshland. Determine and interpret a. P(Y >5). b. P(3 ≤ Y ≤ 6).
An article in the Journal of Quality Technology (Vol. 13, No. 2, 1981, pp. 111–114) describes an experimentthat investigates the effects of four bleaching chemicals on pulp brightness. These four chemicals wereselected at random from a large population of potential bleaching agents. The data are as follows:a. Test the significance of these chemical types with α=0.05.b. If proven significant, perform a multiple comparison method using Fisher’s LSD
