Functional groups are atoms or group of atoms which controls physical and chemical properties of a compound.

Explanation of Solution

A compound contains different properties is due to different functional groups. The functional group is the main part of the compound as it is the key regulator of the properties shown by the compound. Other parts of the compound have indirect influence on the physical and chemical properties of the compound. Different functional groups are hydroxyl (-OH), amino (-NH2), carboxylic acid (-COOH) etc.
