Textbook Problem

A student checked the accuracy of two standard top-loading balances by testing them with a standard 5.000-g mass. The results were as follows:

Balance 1: 4.99 g, 5.04 g, 5.03 g, 5.01 g

Balance 2: 4.97 g, 4.99 g, 4.95 g, 4.96 g

Calculate the average values for balances 1 and 2 and calculate the percent error for each. Which balance is more accurate?

Interpretation Introduction

The average values and percent error in each case has to be calculated and most accurate balance has to be given.

Concept introduction:

Precision is a measurement indicates how well several determination of the same quantity agree.

Accuracy is the agreement of a measurement with the accepted value of the quantity.

Percent error:

The difference between measured result and the accepted value.

Error in measurement = Experimentally determined value - Accepted value.

Average Value for balance 1 and 2 is calculated as,

  Average for balance 1 4.99+ 5.04 + 5.03 + 5.014                                   =  5.0175 gAverage for balance 2 4.97+ 4.99 + 4.95 + 4.964                                   =  4.9675 g.

Hence, the average for balance 1 and 2 are obtained as shown above.

Percent error for balance 1 and 2 is calculated as,

  Errorinmeasurement  = 5.0175 g - 5.000 gPercenterrorforbalance 1 = 5.0175 g - 5
