Concept introduction:
In a reaction, when a secondary alcohol is treated with the concentrated acid, it follows SN1 reaction mechanism that yields a rearranged product. The SN1 is the abbreviation of unimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction. The first step of SN1 reaction is the formation of carbocation. These carbocation undergoes a rearrangement reaction to form a more stable carbocation via either the 1, 2 hydride shift or 1, 2 -methyl shift. The stability order of carbocation is Tertiary > secondary > primary > methyl.
