Diet of ducks bred for broiling. Corn is high in starch content; consequently, it is considered excellent feed for domestic chickens. Does corn possess the same potential in feeding ducks bred for broiling? This was the subject of research published in Animal Feed Science and Technology (April 201 0). The objective of the study was to establish a prediction model for the true metabolizable energy (TME) of corn regurgitated from ducks. The researchers considered 11 potential predictors of TME: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ash (ASH), crude fiber (CF). neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), gross energy (GE), amylose (AM), amylopectin (AP), and amylopectin/amylose (AMAP). Stepwise regression was used to find the best subset of predictors. The final stepwise model yielded the following results:
- a. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 1 of the stepwise regression.
- b. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 2 of the stepwise regression
- c. Give a full interpretation of the final stepwise model regression results.
- d. Explain why it is dangerous to use the final stepwise model as the "best" model for predicting TME.
- e. Using the independent variables selected by the stepwise routine, write a complete second-order model for TME.
- f. Refer to part e. How would you determine if the terms in the model that allow for curvature are statistically useful for predicting TME?

- We have a sample of 2,400 geriatric patients who are in an assisted living home, of which 1,200 participated in a new preventative Drug A. Rates of UTIs tend to be higher than average among this population. As part of a preventative and treatment intervention, we are examining the performance of several drugs: Preventative Drug (before the onset of UTI) Drug A: preventative UTI drug taken daily in hopes to prevent the growth of bacteria that causes UTIs Treatment Drugs (after the onset of UTI) Drug B: New antibiotic for treating UTIs Drug C: Conventional antibiotic for treating UTIs Information for how many patients took each drug or combination of drugs is summarized below in the two tables. Use these to answer questions a) -d) Table 1. The trial was conducted under controlled conditions with uniform amounts of soil. The initial hypothesis was that inoculated plants would outperform their uninoculated counterparts. This assumption is based on the facts that plants need nitrogen to manufacture vital proteins and amino acids and that nitrogen-fixing bacteria would make more of this substance available to plants, increasing their size and yield. There were 8 inoculated plants (I) and 8 uninoculated plants (U). The plant yield as measured by pod weight for each plant is given in Table 2.20 Here are the questions I would like explanations for. Blood samples from wild, free-ranging deer were obtained via the jugular vein immediately after an intramuscular injection of succinylcholine using darts and a capture gun. Deer were bled again approximately 30 minutes after the injection and then released. The level of androgens at time of capture and 30 minutes later, measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), for 15 deers as in Table Q1. Assuming that the populations of androgen at time of injection and 30 minutes later are normally distributed:i) Find the average and standard deviation of this studyii)Determine the critical region of this problem.iii) Test at the 0.05 level of significance whether the androgen concentrations are altered after 30 minutes of restraint.arrow_forwardResearchers examined the effect of phosphate supplementation on bone formation in 6 healthy adult dogs. - Cadmium, a heavy metal, is toxic to animals. Mushrooms, however, are able to absorb and accumulate cadmium at high concentrations. The Czech and Slovak governments have set a safety limit for cadmium in dry vegetables at 0.5 part per million (ppm). M. Melgar et al. measured the cadmium levels in a random sample of the edible mushroom Boletus pinicola and published the results in the paper “Influence of Some Factors in Toxicity and Accumulation of Cd from Edible Wild Macrofungi in NW Spain” (Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Vol. B33(4), pp. 439–455). A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether the mean cadmium level in Boletus pinicola mushrooms is greater than the government’s recommended limit. Hypothesis tests are proposed. For each hypothesis test,a. determine the null hypothesis.b. determine the alternative hypothesis.c. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forwardStudies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids have a wide variety of health benefits. Omega-3 oils can be found in foods such as fish, walnuts, and flaxseed. A company selling milled flaxseed advertises that one tablespoon of the product contains, on average, at least 3800 mg of ALNA, the primary omega-3. a) The company plans to conduct a test to ensure that there is sufficient evidence that its claimiscorrect. Tobesafe, thecompanywantstomakesurethatevidenceshowsthe average is higher than 3800 mg. What are the null and alternative hypotheses? b) Suppose, instead, that a consumer organization plans to conduct a test to see if there is evidence against the claim that the product contains an average of 3800 mg per tablespoon. The consumer organization will only take action if it finds evidence that the claim made by the company is false and that the actual average amount of omega-3 is less than 3800 mg. What are the null and alternative hypotheses?arrow_forwardA study was conducted to assess the impact of nutrient enrichment on zooplankton densities in A & B Islands. An ecologist sampled populations of zooplankton in these two locations and observed the nutrient enrichment level was higher in A island when compared with the level in B island. The introduction of selenium supplements to dairy cows is justified when pastures have low selenium levels. Authors of the article “Effects of Short-Term Supplementation with Selenised Yeast on Milk Production and Composition of Lactating Cows” (Australian J. of Dairy Tech., 2004: 199–203) supplied the following data on milk selenium concentration (mg/L) for a sample of cows given a selenium supplement and a control sample given no supplement, both initially and after a 9-day period. Accordingly, engineers at Lumberworks are investigating a potential new cutting method involving lateral sawing that may reduce the scrap rate. To examine its viability, samples of 600 and 500 planks, respectively, were examined under the old and new methods. Sixty-one of the 600 planks were scrapped under the old method, whereas 36 of the 500 planks were scrapped under the new method. (You may find it useful to reference the appropriate table: z table or t table)a. Construct the 99% confidence interval for the difference between the population scrap rates between the old and new methods, respectively. (Negative values should be indicated by a minus sign.
