Concept explainers
(a)
To determine: Whether added glucose in isolated mitochondria suspension is metabolized into H2O and CO2.
Introduction:
Isotope labeling is a technique which is used to locate the path of an isotope in a metabolic pathway or reaction. In this technique, the reactant substrate is labeled. The labeling refers to the replacement of specific atom by their isotopes.
(b)
To determine: The location of 14C in the oxaloacetate after one turn of citric acid cycle when a brief pulse of [3-14C] pyruvate is added into mitochondria. Also determine the number of turns of cycle required to release all the [3-14C] pyruvate as CO2.
Introduction:
The series of metabolic reactions in which the energy stored in the compounds is released for the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), is called “Krebs’s cycle or citric acid cycle”.
