The first person to calculate the speed of light is Ole Roemer. Roemer used timing eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io to measure the speed of light.Until then, scientists assumed that either the speed of light was too fast to measure or infinite.
Roemer, who worked at the Paris Observatory, did not check the speed of light when he discovered it. Instead he collected detailed observations of Io 's orbit.By timing Jupiter's Io eclipses, Roemer had hoped to determine a more precise value for the orbital period of the satellite. In the seventeenth century these discoveries were of practical significance.
