In Exercises 16.60-16.63, refer to the discussion of using summary statistics in one-way ANOVA on page 713. Note: We have provided values of Fa not given in Table VIII.
16.62 Minke Whales. Entanglement of marine mammals in fishing gear is a global issue and a significant threat to minke whales, in particular. In the article “Fishing Gears Involved in Entanglements of Minke Whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the East Sea of Korea" (Marine Mammal Science, Vol. 26, No. 2, pp. 282-295), K, Song et al, studied the body lengths of minke whales entangled near Korea. The following table provides summary statistics for the body lengths of minke whales entangled at different ocean depths. Both variables, body length and ocean depth, are in meters.
At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that a difference exists in mean body length among minke whales entangled at the four different depths? Note: For the degrees of freedom in this exercise:

- What is meant by the sample space of an experiment?arrow_forwardThe article “Well-Fed Crickets Bowl Maidens Over” (Nature Science Update, February 11, 1999) reported that female field crickets are attracted to males with high chirp rates and hypothesized that chirp rate is related to nutritional status. The usual chirp rate for male field crickets was reported to vary around a mean of 60 chirps per second. To investigate whether the chirp rate was related to nutritional status, investigators fed 22 male crickets a high protein diet for 8 days, after which chirp rate was measured. Let: The parameter μμ be the mean chirp rateof male crickets on a high protein diet for 8 days. Given: The mean chirp rate for the random sample of crickets on the high protein diet was reported to be 65.32 chirps per second with a standard deviation of 12. Research Question: Is there convincing evidence that the mean chirp rate for crickets on a high protein diet implies an advantage in attracting the ladies? It is known that the researchers did not want to…arrow_forwardThe article “Well-Fed Crickets Bowl Maidens Over” (Nature Science Update, February 11, 1999) reported that female field crickets are attracted to males with high chirp rates and hypothesized that chirp rate is related to nutritional status. The data was used to test H0H0: μ = 15 versus HaHa: μ > 15 and the computed P‐value was 0.12. If a 0.05 level of significance is used, what conclusions can be drawn? There is convincing evidence that the mean response time is 15 minutes (or less). There is convincing evidence that the mean response time is greater than 15 minutes. There is not convincing evidence that the mean response time is greater than 15 minutes.arrow_forwardo combat antibiotic resistance, the Quality Improvement Consortium recommends a throat swab to confirm strep throat before a physician prescribes antibiotics to children under age 5. Nationally, 40 percent of children under 5 who received antibiotics did not have a throat swab. The Colorado Department of Health took a random sample of 79 children under the age of 5 who received antibiotics for throat infections and found that 24 did not have a throat swab. At α = .05, is this a statistically significant reduction over last year’s national rate of 40 percent? (a-1) Choose the correct null and alternative hypotheses. H0: π ≥ .40 vs. H1: π < .40 H0: π ≤ .40 vs. H1: π > .40 H0: π = .40 vs. H1: π ≠ .40 (a-2) Calculate the critical value. (A negative value should be indicated by a minus sign. - It turns out that the survey study at the U of M sampled students from a single student residence hall. Explain why sampling students from a single residence hall would have an impact on the external validity of the study.arrow_forwardIn light of a number of recent large-corporation bankruptcies, auditors are becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of fraud. Auditors might be helped in determining the chances of fraud if they carefully measure cash flow. To evaluate this possibility, samples of midlevel auditors from CPA firms were presented with cash-flow information from a fraud case, and they were asked to indicate the chance of material fraud on a scale from 0 to 100. A random sample of 36 auditors used the cash-flow information. Their mean assessment was 36.21, and the sample standard deviation was 22.93. For an independent random sample of 36 auditors not using the cash-flow information, the sample mean and standard deviation were respectively 47.56 and 27.56. Test the assumption that population variances for assessments of the chance of material fraud were the same for auditors using cash-flow information as for auditors not using cash-flow information against a two-sided alternative hypothesis.arrow_forward
