Chapter 20, Problem 20.41AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A reaction scheme for determining the fraction of 14C at the carbonyl carbon and the other fraction of 14C present elsewhere position in phenylacetic acid (PhCH2CO2H) molecule is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

Atoms of the same elements that have different masses and different number of neutrons are known as isotopes. The isotopes of carbon atom are 13C and 14C.

The reduction of an acid in the presence of a hydride like LiAlH4 and NaBH4 forms the corresponding alcohol. Among LiAlH4 and NaBH4, LiAlH4 is mostly preferred for the reduction of acids because it is strong reducing agent.

The enzyme urease increases the rate of urea hydrolysis at pH 8.0 and 20 °C by a factor of 1014. Suppose that a given quantity of urease can completely hydrolyze a given quantity of urea in 19 minutes at pH 8.0 and 20 °C. How long would it take for this amount of urea to be hydrolyzed in the absence of urease at the same temperature and pH in sterile conditions? Include two significant figures in your answer. timeuncatalyzed years * TOOLS x10
P17A.1 The following initial-rate data were obtained on the rate of binding of glucose with the enzyme hexokinase present at 1.34 mmol dm. What is (a) the order of reaction with respect to glucose, (b) the rate constant? [C,H,„O,J/(mmoldm³) 1.00 1.54 3.12 4.02 12 v/(mol dms) 5.0 7.6 15.5 20.0
Figure 7 of Conrad et al. (1999) shows the variation in C-isotopic composition of CO2 as a function of the concentration of methane measured in the soil and aquifers of a site contaminated in the residues of aviation fuels. Explain briefly the aim of these particular measurements made to the environmental study. Also explain briefly why there is a difference in isotopic composition of CO2 obtained via aerobic degradation and methanogenic degradation of AVGAS (fuel residues as contaminants) and the linear “mixing relationship” noted in Figure 7.   How does the degradation process influence the CO2 isotopic signature ? I don't understand why the CO2 from aerobic degradation is lighter than the one from methnogenic degradation ?
