Chapter 21, Problem 11P

In a certain plant, leaf size is determined by four independently assorting genes acting additively. Thus, alleles A, B, C, and D each add 4 cm to leaf length and alleles A′, B′, C′, and D′ each add 2 cm to leaf length. Therefore, an A/A B/B C/C D/D plant has leaves 32 cm long and an A′/AB′/BC′/CD′/D′ plant has leaves 16 cm long.

a. If true-breeding plants with leaves 32 cm long are crossed to true-breeding plants with leaves 16 cm long, the F will have leaves 24 cm long and the genotype A/AB/BC/CD/D′. List all possible leaf lengths and their expected frequencies in the F generation produced from these F plants.
b. Now assume that in a randomly mating population the following allele frequencies occur:
frequency of A = 0.9
frequency of A’ = 0.1
frequency of B = 0.9
frequency of B’ = 0.1
frequency of C = 0.1
frequency of C’ = 0.9
frequency of D = 0.5
frequency of D’ = 0.5
Calculate separately the expected frequency in this population of the three possible genotypes for each of the four genes.
c. What proportion of the plants in the population described in part b will have leaves that are 32 cm long?

In rice, plants homozygous for the recessive allele sd1 are relatively short in stature; heterozygotes are of normal height. Plants carrying one copy of a dominant allele, Xa4 (corresponding to a second gene located on a different chromosome), are resistant to bacterial blight. Note that both the sd1 and Xa4 alleles would be considered "mutant" alleles in this scenario. A farmer obtained two pureline plants (one is homozygous for the sd1 mutant and the other is homozygous for the Xa4 mutant) and crossed them. Assume both pureline plants have identical alleles at all other loci, and no other mutant alleles are present in these two plants, which of these statements is correct? O All the progeny will be susceptible to bacterial blight and will be short. O When a progeny plant from the cross goes through meiosis, gametes will either contain sd1 or Xa4 alleles, but never both. O When a progeny plant from the cross goes through meiosis, four possible types of gametes that may form, and the…
Two pairs of genes (TTLL) are postulated to influence the size of corn in certain varieties with equal and additive effects.  A tall corn variety averaging 6 feet was crossed with a dwarf corn variety averaging 2 feet.  (a)  If the size of the dwarf is attributed to the genotype (ttll), what is the effect of each gene that increases the size above 2 feet?  (b)  Diagram a cross between a large and small variety, and classify the expected F2 phenotypes.
A purple snow pea plant known to be hybrid for three linked genes (a, b, and d) is testcrossed. The progeny phenotypes and frequencies are: +a+ 86 b+d 56 +ad 78 b++ 49 +++ 12 bad 6 ba+ 515 ++d 460   a) Draw the chromosomes of the trihybrid and tester lined mentioned above.  b) Give a map of the gene order with distance.
