Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The observation, Grignard reaction of cyclohexanone with tert-butylmagnesium bromide yields only about 1% of the expected addition product along with 99% unreacted cyclohexanone. If D3O+ is added to the reaction mixture after a suitable period, however, the unreacted cyclohexanone is found to have one deuterium atom incorporated into it, is to be explained.

- The following reactivity order has been found for the saponification of alkyl acetates by aqueous NaOH. Explain. CH3CO2CH3 > CH3CO2CH2CH3 > CH3CO2CH(CH3)2 > CH3CO2C(CH3)3arrow_forwardWhen cis-2-decalone is dissolved in ether containing a trace of HCl, an equilibrium is established with trans-2-decalone. The latter ketone predominates in the equilibrium mixture. Propose a mechanism for this isomerization and account for the fact that the trans isomer predominates at equilibrium.arrow_forwardA step in a synthesis of PGE1 (prostaglandin E1, alprostadil) is the reaction of a trisubstituted cyclohexene with bromine to form a bromolactone. Propose a mechanism for formation of this bromolactone and account for the observed stereochemistry of each substituent on the cyclohexane ring. Alprostadil is used as a temporary therapy for infants born with congenital heart defects that restrict pulmonary blood flow. It brings about dilation of the ductus arteriosus, which in turn increases blood flow in the lungs and blood oxygenation.arrow_forward
- The trimethylsilyl (TMS) protecting group is one of several silicon protecting groups for alcohols. For each reaction, draw the mechanism for the protection of (R)-3-bromo-1-butanol with the following silyl chlorides, using triethylamine as the base: (a) terf-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (TBS-C1] (b) triisopropylsilyl chloride (TEPS-C1) (c) triethylsilyl chloride (TES-C1)arrow_forward1. What effect would you expect on the rate of reaction of ethanol with 2-iodo-2-methyl-butane if the concentration of the halide is tripled? 2. Explain the difference between addition, elimination and substitutionreactions. 3. Optically active 2-butanol slowly racemizes on standing in dilute sulfuricacid. Propose a mechanism to account for this observation.arrow_forward) Draw all the Kekulé structures of anthracene and phenanthrene.(b) Propose mechanisms for the two additions shown.(c) In Chapter 8, most of the additions of bromine to double bonds gave entirely antistereochemistry. Explain why the addition to phenanthrene gives a mixture of synand anti stereochemistry.(d) When the product from (c) is heated, HBr is evolved and 9-bromophenanthrene results.Propose a mechanism for this dehydrohalogenationarrow_forward

Jo Han Sow La NaOH, THF O Nat H3O+ OH NaOH, THF The mechanism involves the following 5 steps: -ō cyclopropanone intermediate 1. Abstraction of a proton to form enolate anion 1; 2. Formation of a cyclopropanone intermediate 2 with expulsion of chloride ion; 3. Addition of hydroxide ion to form tetrahedral intermediate 3; 4. Collapse of the tetrahedral intermediate and breakage of the three-membered ring to form carbanion intermediate 4; 5. Proton transfer to form the rearranged carboxylic acid.
