In Ruff degradation reaction, aldose is oxidized to aldonic acid. Calcium salts of aldonic acid react with ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide to give decarboxylated calcium salts of aldonic acid. The C2 carbon of aldose oxidizes to aldehyde group.
