Dehydration reaction is the loss of water from a single reactant.  Alcohol undergoes dehydration reaction to form alkene.  Sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst for hydration of alkene at room temperature.  The same sulfuric acid acts as a dehydrating agent when treated with alcohol at high temperature.

If there are more than one product can be formed from the alcohol, the major product is decided by Zaitsev’s rule.  This rule states that, the major product formed in an alcohol dehydration is the alkene that has more number of alkyl groups attached to the carbon atoms of the double bond.
