Concept introduction:
Cost Volume Profit (CVP) Analysis:
The Cost Volume Profit analysis is the analysis of the relation between cost, volume, and profit of a product. It analyzes the cost and profits at the different level of production, in order to determine the breakeven point and required the level of sales to earn the desired profit.
Contribution margin means the margin that is left with the company after recovering variable cost out of revenue earned by selling smart phones. The formula for contribution margin is as follows:
Contribution margin = Sales - Variable cost.
Similarly contribution margin ratio = Contribution/sales
Degree of operating leverage:
The Degree of operating leverage shows the relation between change in net operating income and change in sales. The formulas for degree of operating leverage are as follows:

- Refer to Cornerstone Exercise 3.4 for data on Dohini Manufacturing Companys purchasing cost and number of purchase orders. The controller for Dohini Manufacturing ran regression on the data, and the coefficients shown by the regression program are: Required: 1. Construct the cost formula for the purchasing activity showing the fixed cost and the variable rate. 2. If Dohini Manufacturing Company estimates that next month will have 430 purchase orders, what is the total estimated purchasing cost for that month? (Round your answer to the nearest dollar.) 3. What if Dohini Manufacturing wants to estimate purchasing cost for the coming year and expects 5,340 purchase orders? What will estimated total purchasing cost be? (Round your answer to the nearest dollar.) What is the total fixed purchasing cost? Why doesnt it equal the fixed cost calculated in Requirement 1?arrow_forwardMaple Enterprises sells a single product with a selling price of $75 and variable costs per unit of $30. The companys monthly fixed expenses are $22,500. What is the companys break-even point in units? What is the companys break-even point in dollars? Construct a contribution margin income statement for the month of September when they will sell 900 units. How many units will Maple need to sell in order to reach a target profit of $45,000? What dollar sales will Maple need in order to reach a target profit of $45,000? Construct a contribution margin income statement for Maple that reflects $150,000 in sales volume.arrow_forwardMarkson and Sons leases a copy machine with terms that include a fixed fee each month plus acharge for each copy made. Markson made 9,000 copies and paid a total of $480 in January. In April, they paid $320 for 5,000 copies. What is the variable cost per copy if Markson uses the high-low method to analyze costs?arrow_forward
- Basu Company produces two types of sleds for playing in the snow: basic sled and aerosled. The projected income for the coming year, segmented by product line, follows: The selling prices are 30 for the basic sled and 60 for the aerosled. (Round break-even packages and break-even units to the nearest whole unit.) Required: 1. Compute the number of units of each product that must be sold for Basu to break even. 2. Assume that the marketing manager changes the sales mix of the two products so that the ratio is five basic sleds to three aerosleds. Repeat Requirement 1. 3. CONCEPTUAL CONNECTION Refer to the original data. Suppose that Basu can increase the sales of aerosleds with increased advertising. The extra advertising would cost an additional 195,000, and some of the potential purchasers of basic sleds would switch to aerosleds. In total, sales of aerosleds would increase by 12,000 units, and sales of basic sleds would decrease by 5,000 units. Would Basu be better off with this strategy?arrow_forwardSales Needed to Earn Target Income Chillmax Company plans to sell 3,500 pairs of shoes at 60 each in the coming year. Variable cost is 35% of the sales price; contribution margin is 65% of the sales price. Total fixed cost equals 78,000 (includes fixed factory overhead and fixed selling and administrative expense). Required: 1. Calculate the sales revenue that Chillmax must make to earn operating income of 81,900 by using the point in sales equation. 2. Check your answer by preparing a contribution margin income statement based on the sales dollars calculated in Requirement 1.arrow_forwardUsing the information in the previous exercises about Marleys Manufacturing, determine the operating income for department B, assuming department A sold department B 1,000 units during the month and department A reduces the selling price to the market price.arrow_forward
- Markham Farms reports the following contribution margin income statement for the month of August. The company has the opportunity to purchase new machinery that will reduce its variable cost per unit by $2 but will increase fixed costs by 15%. Prepare a projected contribution margin income statement for Markham Farm assuming it purchases the new equipment. Assume sales level remains unchanged.arrow_forwardVariety Artisans has a bottleneck in their production that occurs within the engraving department. Arjun Naipul, the COO, is considering hiring an extra worker, whose salary will be $45,000 per year, to solve the problem. With this extra worker, the company could produce and sell 3,500 more units per year. Currently, the selling price per unit is $18 and the cost per unit is $5.85. Using the information provided, calculate the annual financial impact of hiring the extra worker.arrow_forwardAn investor buys 550 NFR common at $10 in January Year 1 and 210 NFR common at $15 in June of Year 2. - An auto parts supplier sells Hardy-brand batteries to car dealers and auto mechanics. The annual demand is approximately 1,200 batteries. The supplier pays $28 for each battery and estimates that the annual holding cost is 30 percent of the battery’s value. It costs approximately $20 to place an order (managerial and clerical costs). The supplier currently orders 100 batteries per month. What is the economic order quantity? Based on your answer above, how many orders will be placed per year using the EOQ? Determine the ordering, handling, and total inventory costs for the EOQ.
